If you’re visiting Morocco in the winter, it’s important to pack warm clothing. Nights can be chilly, especially in the desert regions.

Layers are always a good idea, as you can always take them off if it gets too hot during the day.

Bring practical and comfortable shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of walking while in Morocco, so it’s important to pack comfortable shoes. If you’re visiting during the summer, sandals or other open-toe shoes are a good option. Just be sure to pack socks to wear with them, as you’ll need to take your shoes off when entering mosques.

Go for loose fitting clothes

If you are a woman, as a general rule, it’s best to dress modestly when traveling in Muslim countries. This means covering your arms and legs, as well as avoiding clothing that’s too tight or revealing. In Morocco, you’ll see many women wearing loose-fitting clothes like dresses, tunics, and pants. If you’re a man, you’ll be fine in jeans or khakis or event shorts.

Bring a scarf

Wearing a scarf in Morocco is not only a practical way to protect your head and face from the sun, but it’s also a cultural consideration. You can use the scarf to cover up your hair when entering mosques or other religious sites. Also, a good looking scarf can be a great way to add a pop of color or pattern to your outfit.

Pack light and versatile

When packing for Morocco, it’s important to choose items that can be easily mixed and matched. This will help you create different looks with the same basic pieces of clothing and save space in your suitcase. It’s also a good idea to pack items that can be easily dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

Don’t overpack

While it’s good to be prepared, it’s also important not to overpack. You don’t want to be lugging around a heavy suitcase. Try to pack light and only bring the essentials because you will be doing a lot of shopping in Morocco!

What to pack for Morocco in Summer & Spring

Morocco has a Mediterranean climate, which means that summers and springs are hot and dry while the winters are mild and wet. If you’re planning on visiting Morocco during the summer or springtime, here is what you should pack!

  • Long, maxi dresses and skirts

Long dresses and skirts are a great way to protect your legs from the sun and stay cool in the heat in the summer time and of course the unsolicited male attention. Skirts and dresses can also be easily dressed up or down, making them perfect for all occasions on trip to Morocco.

Whether you are touring the Medina in Marrakech, exploring the Souks or relaxing by the pool in your Riad, these versatile pieces will have you covered.

As well as being a great way to accessorize your outfit, a scarf can be used for a number of practical purposes while in Morocco.

Use it as a headscarf to protect your hair and face from the scorching sun on a Sahara camel tour, or wear it around your shoulders or chest when entering religious sites.

Keep in mind that covering your head is not mandatory as some bloggers might have you believe.

As mentioned earlier, you will be doing a lot of walking while in Morocco, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Sandals or open-toe shoes are ideal for summertime travel when walking short distances only but if you are planning on doing any serious exploring, comfortable closed toe shoes are a better option.

  • Loose fitting tunics and tops

Tunics and shirts that flow away from the body are both practical and stylish items to pack for a trip to Morocco. They will keep you cool in the heat, protect your skin from the sun and most importantly, they are modest.

I would go for linen or cotton materials in solid colors or simple patterns that can be easily dressed up or down.

  • loose fitting pants or leggings

Whether you choose pants, capris, or leggings, make sure they are comfortable and not too tight.

I prefer packing pants as they offer more coverage than leggings but if you do choose to pack leggings, make sure to bring a long tunic or shirt to wear over them.

If you are planning on doing any hiking or exploring in the desert, I would recommend packing a pair of lightweight trousers that can be easily rolled up.

Solid colors or simple patterns are best and you will want to avoid anything too tight or revealing.

  • Button down shirt or kimono

A button down shirt or kimono is a must-have item for any trip, but it’s especially important to pack one when traveling to Morocco.

This is because you will need to cover your shoulders and chest when entering religious sites. A loose fitting shirt or kimono is perfect for this and can be easily dressed up or down.

Shorts are a great option for a day on the beach or even to explore the Medina on a hot day but not the kind of crop shorts you would wear in the US or Europe.

To be respectful of Moroccan culture, you will want to make sure your shorts are at least mid-tight length.

Bikinis and one-piece swimsuits are fine to wear at the pool or beach but you will want to make sure to pack a sarong or swimsuit cover-up to wear when not in the water.

This is for both modesty reasons and to protect your skin from the harsh sun.

Some parts of Morocco can get quite chilly at night and early mornings, especially in the spring, so it’s always a good idea to pack a lightweight jacket .

A denim jacket or a light windproof jacket are both great options.

To protect your face from the sun and can also be a stylish addition to any outfit. I prefer to pack a wide-brimmed sun hat but any type of hat will do. You can also buy one once you arrive in Morocco. There are plenty of cute handmade hats to choose from!

What to pack for Morocco in winter and fall

In Morocco, the climate varies dramatically depending on where you are in the country. In winter and fall, when temperatures can range from chilly to downright cold depending on the region, it’s important to pack accordingly. Here are some tips on what to bring with you when visiting Morocco during these cooler months.

You will need a heavy jacket for the colder months, especially if you are planning on doing any desert tours. I would go for a puffer jacket or a down jacket for the ultimate in warmth.

A scarf should always be in your Morocco packing list but in winter a warm scarf is essential. I like to pack a wool scarf that can be used as both a fashion accessory and an extra layer of warmth on those chilly days.

If you get cold easily like me, don’t forget to pack a warm gloves and hats! Again, these are items that you can also buy once you arrive in Morocco but if you want to be prepared I would recommend packing a pair of warm wool knitted gloves and hat. They won’t take up much space in your luggage anyway.

Thick socks are always a good idea when traveling in cold weather to keep your feet warm and to avoid blisters. I like to pack a pair of wool socks that can be worn with both shoes and boots.

I would recommend packing a pair of closed-toe shoes or boots but make sure they are waterproof. Rainy days are common in Morocco during winter and you don’t want your shoes to get ruined.

Ankle boots are a great option as they can be worn with jeans or leggings. If you are planning on doing any hiking, make sure to pack a pair of sturdy walking boots.

Jeans and leggings can keep you warm in the colder months and are also comfortable for long days of exploring. so pack at least one pair of jeans and a few leggings.

  • Long-sleeved shirts and sweaters

To layer under your jacket or to wear on their own, long-sleeved shirts and sweaters are must-haves for Morocco in winter and fall. The weather may suddenly change throughout the day so it’s always good to dress up in layers and allow yourself to adjust accordingly.

What to pack for Morocco all year round

I don’t travel anywhere without my sunscreen and I would highly recommend packing it regardless of what time of year you are visiting Morocco. The sun may not be as strong in winter but it’s still important to protect your skin.

Again, sunglasses are a must all year round in Morocco. They will protect your eyes from the sun and also help to reduce the glare when driving or walking around.

A reusable water bottle is essential for any trip, but especially in a country like Morocco where tap water is not always safe to drink. I like to pack a reusable water bottle that can be refilled with filtered water. This way I don’t have to buy plastic bottles of water and I can stay hydrated throughout the day.

  • A small backpack or cross-body bag

A small backpack or cross-body bag is perfect for carrying your essentials while exploring Morocco. I like to pack a lightweight cross body bag that can be easily and safely carried around all day.

If you are visiting Morocco regardless of what time of year, I would recommend packing your swimwear. Swimming outdoors in winter may be too cold for some but if you are staying in a resort or hotel with a heated pool, it can be the perfect way to relax after a long day of exploring.

I always travel with a small first aid kit and I would recommend packing one for your trip to Morocco as well. This should include items like band-aids, painkillers, antidiarrheal medication, and insect repellent.

What NOT to pack for Morocco

As a general rule, you will want to avoid anything that is too tight, too short, or too revealing. This goes for both men and women. This includes items like shorts, tank tops, and revealing dresses.

Also, don’t pack your drone. There are strict regulations on flying drones in Morocco and they won’t allow it inside the country. It’s best to leave your drone at home.
