What to do in a lockdown? 10 fun and productive activities

124views

Honestly, I never thought I would be writing about what to do in a lockdown. Firstly, because I have never expected to be in self-isolation because of a Pandemic. The second reason is that I consider myself a hermit and working from home was one of my life goals but I think NOT ANYMORE. The reality of being stuck at home for weeks can be very stressful and time-wasting if we don’t manage it. The idea of being locked at home to protect yourself and your loved ones from a contagious virus, hearing about how many people are dying every day and seeing people all over the world stockpiling food fearing it runs out can make us panic and lose control over our lives. It is very important to stay focused and take care of your mental and physical health.

Here are some suggestions on how to take advantage of your lockdown and even enjoy it.

Set a daily routine

Nothing can help you stay focused and keep your lıfe together more than time management. Especially, for people who are not used to working from home. You have plenty of free time and the way you manage it will decide how your day will go. It is better to plan your day the night before and set a clear schedule with daily goals even if it’s chores or work. Don’t forget to allocate specific times for exercise and healthy meals.

Reduce screen time

In the first week of our self-isolation, the amount of screen time was just too high. Our time was mostly spent on Netflix and social media. Many studies show that screen time can highly contribute to your anxiety and depression. Given that depression is the last thing we need at the moment we have reduced our screen time by replacing it with more fun activities such as cooking, training, playing games and taking small walks when it is possible.

Exercise and exercise more

Home workout classes are an efficient and free way to stay fit when gyms are shut down. Online dance and meditation classes are my favorite. There is lots of great content on YouTube but try and find an online channel that you like and trust. Even though home workouts can be done without gym equipment, you can still buy Kettlebells or other useful equipment online. Keep in mind that maintaining healthy training will boost your immune system and protect your mental health as well.

Try gardening

I think we all have this little list of things and activities that we wished we could do if we had more time. Now is the right time to take action. I have always wanted to have an outdoor garden but unfortunately I don’t. So during this lockdown I thought of growing my small indoor garden. I have plenty of time to and I can order everything online. Gardening helps reduce stress, freshen the air and connects us with the outdoors. It is a great activity to spend your time on.

Start Cooking

I’m not the baking-type person, but this lockdown has opened the door for some new skills. With all the food companies shut down because of these unforeseen circumstances, you will get a chance to learn how to cook healthy meals, try new recipes and have fun with messing things up in the kitchen. If you don’t like cooking, baking can be very interesting! This week I made Moroccan bread and pancakes.

Redecorate your house

Did you know that you can redecorate your house with zero budget? Yes, you don’t have to spend a lot of money. There are always free options. Play around with your furniture’s layout, organize and add new items to your shelve, or bring in your outdoor plants to add a more fresh look. You can also consider low budget decor ideas. You don’t have to buy expensive decor items but something new can be always interesting.

Travel the world virtually

Traveling is now possible from your couch. With Google Earth for Chrome you can travel anywhere while self-isolating in a few seconds using your browser. Google Earth offers you 3D views and even street views. Today I felt like exploring Edinburgh in Scotland. The lockdown might prevent you from traveling, but it won’t stop you from dreaming. Another advantage of virtual travel is that it will help you plan your first real trip after the lockdown.

Cultivate your mind

One of the activities that can cultivate your brain is reading. It is now scientifically proven that reading regularly improves your mind and body. It means that avid readers are not only strengthing their brain, but it also makes them positive and happier. If you are one of the countless people with no reading habits, you are missing out on a lot of advantages.

Take certified online courses

A lot of universities and reputable online platforms offer free and certified online courses in all fields. You will have the opportunity to plan your study time based on your convenience and schedule flexibility. Online courses are a way to advance your career and improve your skills and knowledge. Paid courses look great on resumes. If you obtain an online degree or certificate from a prestigious university, you’ll boost your career with the speed of light.

Connect with your family and friends

Now we understand the importance of having our loved ones around us. Fortunately, we live in an age where connecting with people is easier than it’s ever been, During this lockdown people have been using technology every day to keep in touch with their families and friends. Zoom is one of many amazing and fun apps to host video calls with several members.

All in all, I hope the above activities can make it a little easier for you to get through the days of this lockdown. In the meantime, let me know in a comment how do you keep yourself busy.
