The Polisario Front controls about one-third of the territory in the form of a strip of land in the East known as the Free Zone.

The US and many of the EU countries have recently recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. However, the UN still considers Western Sahara a disputed territory and has been trying to broker a peace agreement between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

You may come across two different maps of Morocco. One map includes Western Sahara as part of Morocco and another map sets it as a separate territory from Morocco.
